Pet Care Important During Fourth Of July - 1011now Posted: 03 Jul 2012 05:09 PM PDT The Central Nebraska Humane Society's Executive Director, Laurie Dethloff, knows this is a crucial time of year, "The heat really throws things into a different perspective and then with the fireworks going, it just really scares them." The Central Nebraska Humane Society says because of that combination, this week it's very important to keep an eye on your pets. "Dogs tend to run away," says Animal Control Officer Jason Truell, "they want to get away from that loud noise. Usually after the Fourth of July, we'll have a lot more 'running at larges' for dogs that are kept outside." But, this year, it's not just dogs.. "We have had several cats come in now, and that's unusual," says Dethloff. "Of course, when they get outside, they don't always move. They kind of hunker down for a couple of days, so with the heat and no water or food, we're very concerned for our cats as well." Staff at the Central Nebraska Humane Society say they're fortunate enough not to have a lot of fireworks going off, but if you are not that fortunate, they recommend keeping a name tag on your pet or coming by for a microchip. Dethloff says, "Microchipping has helped a lot of owners get their pets back as quickly as possible. Not all tags stay on, and if they happen to be a cat, they usually, if they're not in the house, don't have their tags on. So, it's a longer process. We're really recommending that if you're baby-sitting somebody else's pets while they're on vacation or your pets get loose, please be contacting your shelters right away. If you've got pictures, give us good descriptions and we can be watching and get them home as soon as possible."
