Supervise Pets During Upcoming Holiday - Indiana's NewsCenter

Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control is reminding pet owners to supervise their pets during the upcoming Fourth of July holiday week.

The best place for your pet is at home but if your pet happens to escape, there are a couple of tips to help you keep them safe and at home.

Keep your animal inside when fireworks are going off. Animals panic and flee from the loud noise of the fireworks.

When you do have your pet outside, make sure all of the gates are closed and that your pet is wearing an updated identification on it's collar. Supervise your pet while it is outside.

Do not leave your pet inside a parked car. The excessive heat inside a car can reach over 120 degrees in a matter of minutes which can kill your pet.

If your pet does manage to escape the shelter will be open Thursday July 5th from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is located at 3020 Hillegas Road. Call 427-1244 for information and to report a found pet.

Animal Care and Control also wants to remind pet owners that animals should not be brought downtown during the Three Rivers Festival. Officers will be patrolling and will ask you to remove your animal. A second violation will result in a court appearance. This is for the protection of people and animals.
