Spokane Veterinarian Uses Facebook to Connect With Pet Owners - MarketWatch (press release)

SPOKANE, Wash., Jun 21, 2012 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- A-1 Animal Care Veterinary Services veterinarian Dr. Charles Lohr has started a Facebook page for the clinic to stay connected with pet owners. They post about aspects of pet care, such as pet senior wellness, pet dental care, kitten and puppy wellness, as well as seasonal pet concerns. They also plan to use the Facebook page to keep visitors informed about events in the community that local pet owners may find useful, as well as to let pet owners know about specials and events at the clinic.

Dr. Lohr says they started the Facebook page to adapt to the new ways in which people search for information about veterinary health. "When I became a veterinarian, people went to the library if they wanted information. Today pet owners use the web to research pet health. They use Facebook to ask friends and people they trust about issues like pet senior wellness, puppy and kitten wellness, and allergies. Our page is a place for pet owners to come and get fast access to trusted information to help keep their pets healthy."

The Spokane veterinarian says that because the nature of Facebook communication is so immediate, they write their posts with that in mind. As flea and tick season began, for example, they posted a factoid about fleas. Posts like this remind pet owners to keep their pets' flea and tick preventatives current, he says. Other seasonal posts have included warnings about buying rabbits for Easter, and keeping Valentine's Day chocolate out of reach of their dogs. In addition to seasonal posts, they regularly post links to their blog articles, which cover a range of animal health issues, such as pet senior wellness, vaccinations, nutrition, exercise and the services they provide as an emergency veterinary clinic.

Community involvement is another way Dr. Lohr plans to use the clinic's Facebook page. He explains that they will post updates about local events that may be of interest to families with pets in the Spokane area. People who "Like" their page are also invited to share similar announcements. Pet owners can also post pet health questions that Dr. Lohr and other members of the staff can answer, which he hopes will help disseminate pet health information even further throughout the community.

Dr. Lohr says he also wants their Facebook page to be entertaining. "Pets bring so much joy and laughter into our lives, so we really want to celebrate all pets on our page. We post pictures of our own pets, trivia, quizzes, and funny pet videos. Pet owners can learn and have fun on our Facebook page at the same time."
