| Tall Tails Doggie Day Care Warns Against Pet Theft - MarketWatch (press release) Posted: 08 May 2012 03:02 AM PDT BOSTON, May 8, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- An increased activity of pet theft has New York lawmakers considering a bill to adjust the severity of the crime. According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, the bill could increase the misdemeanor crime to a felony larceny classification. While the law could eventually raise national attention, pet facilities like Tall Tails Doggie Day Care urge dog owners to protect their animals while they are away from home. Many pet owners leave their dogs at home while they spend the day at work, or leave their animals in care of a sitter during lengthy vacations. However, many of these pet owners are unaware of the danger of pet theft. Economic motivation has many thieves targeting homes to attain a variety of breeds to use for many different purposes. The American Kennel Club has discovered a noticeable increase of pet thefts between 2007 and 2011. Lisa Peterson, of the AKC, notes that many breeds are taken to sell at low rates in open-air markets or from vans on the side of the road. Others discover that stolen pets are subject to serve as bait in dog fighting rings or as weapons in domestic violence. Thieves have even gone as far as to demand ransom for a beloved pet. This kind of extensive abuse and torture is one of the many reasons the bill has passed from the Senate to the Assembly for further consideration. Although the bill raises awareness of this crime in New York, no other states have pending bills on the matter. Jordan Holt, owner of Tall Tails Doggie Day Care, urges his Massachusetts client-base to stay aware of rising trends in pet theft. He comments, "Losing a pet is like losing a member of your family, and they deserve to stay protected." The Tall Tails Doggie Day Care, among thousands of other similar businesses, is an insured organization that offers pet owners a sense of comfort. "In addition to protecting your pet from harm, dogs can enjoy fresh air and personal attention at our facilities," explains Holt. Satisfied clients agree that the affordable cost of dog care is worth avoiding the potential loss or harm of a pet.
