Our furry friends also like being able to run around outside. But, with the nice weather, also comes extra pet care. In Tucker's case, it landed the 2-year old Shetland Sheepdog a visit to Forest Hill's Veterinary Clinic. He has been vomiting and has diarrhea. "What happens after the thaw, is there are a lot of things out there for them to eat", says Dr. Stasiak. "So, a lot of times we treat that symptomatically. Usually within 24-hours it will get better." Dr. Stasiak also reminded pet owners of the other ailments that come along with warm weather. "We've already seen pets with fleas and ticks." Dogs and cats should be treated as soon as possible. They should also be protected against heartworm disease. "The tablet is given once a month, it protects against heartworm, which is spread by mosquitoes. It also gets rid of hookworms and roundworms that they get from walking in areas that other dogs have defecated in." For Tucker, by the time he was seen by Dr. Stasiak, the worst was over. But, chances are, given the dog's inquisitive nature, whatever was out there, still is and Tucker will likely get into it again. Dr. Stasiak says, unfortunately, there's not a lot you can do to prevent your dog from eating stuff in the yard. But, if your pet is sick with vomiting or diarrhea for more than 48-hours, you should call your vet.
