For anyone who owns or takes care of animals, knowing the location of the nearest emergency animal clinic is a necessity.

The contact information is also helpful for anyone who might encounter an animal emergency.

When Emergency Pet Care of Jupiter moved, Medical Director, Eugenie Bucher, VMD, and Hospital Administrator, Cindy Sutton feared that people might continue to bring sick or injured animals to their previous location. Clients were alerted via email, but those who have never visited the clinic could still be unaware of the move.

The clinic is now located at Intracoastal Animal Hospital in Tequesta.

"It's a beautiful facility that we share with Dr. (Gerald) Bezner. We have everything that we had before to provide high quality, critical care," said Dr. Bucher.

They serve the community when most veterinary offices are closed evenings, weekends and holidays. In addition to emergency and urgent care, they provide surgical treatment, in-house diagnostic testing such as blood work, radiology and ultrasound, as well as supervised overnight care.

"It's important that we get the word out and people share the news with their friends and neighbors. We don't want anyone driving to an empty building during an emergency, finding we're gone and panicking," Sutton said.

"We're only five miles from our previous location, and we're still here. We encourage everyone to call the office first so we can be prepared, have everything set up and get to the vehicle to help pets in. It's a more efficient scenario."

It's also an opportunity for the clinic staff to provide directions to their new location. However, during a critical situation, it isn't always possible to make that courtesy call.

"We're here for urgent care. Our motto is, 'When every second counts, you can count on us.' We offer piece of mind, and we're here to get our patients and their owners through anything," Sutton said.

"For anyone who is unsure if they should come in, we encourage them to call and our experienced techs will provide a consult. We can't diagnose or prescribe over the phone, but we can listen to what's going on and tell if it's something that should be seen or not. People pick up on the smallest oddities in their pet's behavior, but their instinct is usually right."

Most patients are from south Martin and north Palm Beach counties, but the clinic is open to anyone in need of emergency or urgent pet care. Bucher specializes in small animal veterinary care, but large or exotic animals are seen on a case-by-case basis and caretakers should call in advance. Birds are referred to a specialist.

"I've been with the clinic for almost eight years and I've seen more than 13,000 pets," said Bucher.

"We were forced to move due to economic crisis, but we have not abandoned the community. We're still here and providing services as usual. (Pet owners) don't need to drive 20 miles north or south to get to an emergency hospital."
