A CARNEGIE animal lover is offering refuge to the pets of mentally ill people in crisis.

Naomi Snell has launched a foster care program to ensure people don't lose their pets when personal crises necessitate time in hospital.

"Pets are our best friends and they aid recovery," she said.

"I realised there was a gap in care when it comes to people's pets," she said.

"I have heard of terrible situations where people with mental health problems have been hospitalised and have no one to look after their animals and have to get rid of them."

Last week, Ms Snell's not-for-profit organisation Paws for Purrfect Patient Therapy relocated its first clients, a dog and four cats, until their owner was well enough to have them back.

Barbara Hocking, executive director of national mental health charity SANE, said Ms Snell's program was "a lovely idea".

"If someone has to go into hospital and can't be assured their pets will be cared for, it adds to their stress and anxiety," she said.

Anyone who would like to be a pet foster carer can contact Ms Snell on 0421 885 790
