HOPATCONG — With a countywide surge in household pet surrenders and abandonment cases, Hopatcong has launched a "Save Our Dogs and Cats" campaign to keep family pets in their homes and out of animal shelters, which are rapidly reaching capacity.

A dog and cat died in an apartment fire this afternoon in the North Side 's Lakeview community, according to the Chicago Fire Department. The fire occurred about 2:15 p.m. in a 4th-floor unit of a four-story apartment building at 520 W. Addison St., said Fire Department spokesman Joe Roccasalva.
